Social Justice in the World Language Classroom

social justice in the World Language Classroom

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. In order for things to change, we have to change what we’re doing. This means in our communities, as well as, in our classrooms. Teaching for social justice in the World Language Classroom is great place to start to make a difference.

As teachers, we spend so much time with students and they pay attention to us. They pay attention to how we interact with others, how we treat others, and how we express ourselves. They are watching EVERYTHING.

I’ve had quite a few students tell me about a moment that stuck with them and I’ve heard stories from teacher friends. They’re watching us. For that reason, it’s important to teach for social justice in the World Language Classroom and all other subjects too.

I’m so excited to share that I teamed up with TpT for the Teach For Justice grant and created a Social Justice Weekly Word Study Unit to help expose students to those key topics that will help them understand others and their experiences.

Teacher Presentation – DIGITAL + PRINT

Use this during discussions with students! Create a comprehensible definition together or use the definition provided. Display examples that represent the words for that week.

Social Justice Student Word Study Journal – DIGITAL + PRINT

The piece is great for students to record their thoughts and feelings about things they’ve experienced or seen. The journal will be an amazing tool in initiating and facilitating your discussions.

This or That Scenarios – DIGITAL + PRINT

One of my favorite elements of this unit! Students are given a scenario and the choice between two social justice terms. Students must think critically about what they’ve studied to decide which is best option.

Poems with Discussion Questions – DIGITAL + PRINT

These poems are great openers for the Social Justice Word Study or to use as a midway checkpoint with students. Both poems included encourage students to think critically about social issues and the experiences of others.

Videos with Discussion Questions – DIGITAL + PRINT

Explore and discuss a variety of social justice related topics with this portion of the resource. Students will watch videos and answer comprehension and discussion questions based on what they’ve seen.
