How do I make Spanish class fun? How can I get my students to speak more in Spanish? One way to get students talking more and having fun is by using fortune tellers activities in Spanish Class.
I learned a lot of Spanish in my high school classes. They were very structured but I can’t say they were fun. There also weren’t very many opportunities for speaking with other classmates. I’m sure many of you can relate to that.
That’s why I love to get students up, moving, and chatting. Output opportunities are important for students acquiring a language. It’s especially important to provide students with low stress opportunities to use the language. That’s where the fortune tellers activities come into play.
Fortune Teller Speaking Activities
Do you remember playing for fortune tellers or cootie catchers as a child? I remember playing with them and making them!
Each Fortune Teller has 8 questions that students will use to chat with classmates in Spanish. Ther questions are illustrated with images to help students make connections.
There is also a version included with sentence starters to assist students.
How to play:
- Student 1 will choose a corner tab.
- Student 2 hold count off the syllables in the word on that tab. For example, ver Netflix. (Ver-Net-flix) 3 moves to start.
- Student 1 will choose a number 1-8 in the middle of the fortune teller.
- Student 2 will count of that number.
- Student 1 with choose one of the displayed numbers for a question.
- Student 2 will open the chosen question and ask the student in Spanish.
Repeat steps until the students switch partners. I recommended setting a 1 minute time for partner switches.
