4 Ways to Differentiate Running Dictation

Do your students love running dictation? Oh, right! It’s a super fun activity that gets them up out of their seats. What’s not to love?! Check out these 4 ways to differentiate running dictation to keep your students on their toes and to keep this activity exciting.

1. Fill in the Blank

Have a story that you’ve been working with? Pull 10-15 sentences from the text. 

Then, remove a key word or phrase from each sentence. Students will have to  report the sentence back to their partner as usual but will also have to take it the step further by completing the sentence.

Give them the vocabulary they need to be successful in communicating where a blank is supposed to be located. 

“Gianna no quiere _________ al banco con su mamá.”

“Gianna no quiere ESPACIO al banco con su mamá.”

2. Dictate Questions

Perfect way to switch up students answering comprehension questions. Put the questions for a story or review one the strips and have them dictate them to their partners. Then, the next student is for students to answer the questions. 

¿De dónde es Alberto?

¿Qué problema tiene Alberto?

3. Finish the Sentence

Very similar to fill in the blank running dictation. Instead of having a blank in the middle of sentences, students will be provided with sentence starters. 

This will be great to review students communicating personal information and for a unit, story review or after a special person interview.

Personal information

  • Yo soy de…
  • Mi cumpleaños es…
  • Mi mejor amigo(a) es…

Story sentences or Special Person Interviews

  • Sara no quiere …
  • Teo es una persona …

4. Story Dictation + Sequence

Want to make sure your students are paying attention? Dictate a story to review vocabulary with students. Pull key moments  from the story and put them on the strips. Have students put the strips in order of how the events happened.

Instructions: Memorize the phrases. Then, put the phrases in order.

Claudia no tiene los ingredientes.

Claudia busca los ingredientes.

Claudia va a la cocina.

Claudia va al supermercado.
