10 Ways to Use Color By Number Activities

January 26, 2022

I love color by number activities because they can fit into a lesson in so many different way! Check out all the ways I’ve used gotten more use out of color by number activities.

1. Sub plans

Have to be out last minute? Didn’t have a chance to update your sub plans you used? I have been there!

Don’t stress out! The color by number activities that I’ve created have definitely been a life-saver when I’m in a jam. Student don’t just get to color an activity quickly. Oh no no no…they have to work for it.

They have to engage with the content in order to even know which colors to use!

Perfect to leave with a substitute!

2. Classwork

Raise your hand if you’ve had a day when you just…..CAN’T! Let’s be honest! We’ve all been there. This can be a great classwork activity that gives you a break from being in front of the classroom. Students get a more calming and relaxing activity.

It’s a win-win for everyone!

3. Station Activity

Stations, oh stations! I love using stations because they are great for collaborative learning. Planning stations can be a task. (…and not a fun one.)

A couple by number activity is easy to add to a stations activity.

4. Vocabulary practice and image recognition

I try to avoid using English to help students make connections with Spanish. Using vocabulary riddles and images as questions types has helped students tremendously.

They have to read in the target and think a little more with the riddles. Images recognition questions help to reinforce Spanish.

5. Homework

Best homework assignment ever! You just want me to color? (Haha..not quite.) Even though students have to answer questions to get the colors, I have YET to have complaints about this as a homework assignment.

6. Fast-finishers

IMAGINE…that one student that finishes early NO MATTER WHAT! I know you have the image of them in your head. Maybe you have one every class period.

This type of activity will be perfect! You can post them in a specific part of your room and students will know exactly where to get them.

They can do color by number activities from previous or a current unit! It’s all in the target language.

7. Review BEFORE and AFTER holiday breaks

How crazy do students get before a break? CRAY! It’s a jungle. How are students when they return from break? They just want to catch up with friends.

A color by number activity will help calm students a bit and allow them to chat quietly while still working on something in the target language.

8. Test review

So many options! You can have students work independently, pair students, group students, or answer questions as a whole class.

9. Quiz

Quick 12 question quiz! You can have students work independently and use the questions as a quiz grade.

10. Extra credit

Picture this, it’s the end of the semester and you get this question, “How can I bring my grade up?” or “Do you have extra credit?”

No teacher wants to go make an extra credit assignment when they’re already drowning in regular credit!

This is a NO PREP option for you to assign if you allow extra credit!

I also love that while you’re getting all of these uses of color by number activities, you’re reinforcing the different colors in Spanish without having an explicit lesson.
