Incorporating consistent daily classroom routines is vital for effective language learning in any world language classroom. A structured routine like calendar talk not only offers daily Spanish language practice but also provides a fun way for students to learn about dates, weather, national days, cultural events, and more. Calendar Talk can transform daily routines into engaging learning moments where students discuss the days of the week, ask basic questions, answer personal questions and share insights. This predictable routine is an excellent classroom management tool that sets the stage for meaningful Spanish class routines throughout the school year.
One favorite Calendar Talk activity that I’ve introduced at the beginning of the year is National Day Calendar Talk. This low-prep, interactive resource allows students to explore fun facts and celebrate unique “national days.” A great way to implement calendar talk into the daily routines is to start at the beginning of the year with topics that students find relatable and engaging, like “National Donut Day.” Calendar talk is a low prep addition to your class time and an easy way to incorporate holidays into your calendar talk routine. Sharing fun extension activities tied to the national day topic—like a scavenger hunt or having students keep a daily notebook for notes on the day’s topic—encourages engagement and retention. Hanging the pages from the National Day Calendar Talk presentation on a bulletin board creates a visual reminder of each day’s theme, adding variety and keeping students curious. Adding the calendar talk slides to a bulletin board in the hallway or a place with lots of traffic from other students would be a great way to encourage school community.
I created National Day Calendar Talk presentations for each month of the year with short passages about a variety of national days as a way to provide novice and returning students with more comprehensible input in the target language and to use the personal questions to foster organic conversations with students and discuss personal opinions. The national days from the calendar slides serve as great conversation starters and lead to great opportunities for organic conversations with the students. Calendar talk is great for discussing:

- birthdays of the month and birthday celebrations
