Extension Activities for Reading Comprehension Spanish Class

Looking for extension activities to assess students skills when reading? Dive into some fun and creative extension activities for your Spanish reading class! These ideas are all about getting your students to think more deeply and play around with the stories and vocab they’ve been learning. Whether it’s through a group chat, a quick writing task, or a bit of drawing, these activities are designed to keep the learning going in a relaxed way. They’re perfect for helping students connect more with the language and culture while having a good time. Plus, they’ll help reinforce what you’ve already covered in class!

Cierto/Falso

Use true/false as a listening or reading comprehension activity. You can use quick check comprehension slips like these or make it more informal by having students answer on white boards or aloud.

Sequence of events

Perfect for stories with chapters or stories with defining events. Have students order events by numbering them in an activity.

Want to make it more interactive?

Sentence strips – Prep and cut sentence strips. Students can order them in pairs.

Running dictation – Place the sentences out of order in the hallway. Students will do the running dictation activity like they normally do but the twist is they have to record the sentence and then order them. Sequencing sheet freebie?

Illustrate selected sentence

Whole class – Create a quick presentation with sentences pulled from a reading passage. Show students the sentences one at a time and give them a chance to quickly illustrate it.

Independent – Give students 6-10 sentences with a box for each. Have them illustrate the sentences.

Matching sentences with illustrations

Super quick activity! Students will match the images to illustrations.

Lógico/ilógico

I love this activity. It gets students thinking. You can change the verb or a vocabulary word in the text to make it a little wonky. Then, have students decide if it is logical or illogical.

Unscramble the sentence

1. Pull 5-10 sentences from a text. Mix up the words and have students reorder them to be complete sentences.

2. Create sentences that go with the text and unscramble them. It will serve as a comprehension activity and review.

Translation activities

Pull key structures or phrases from a text in the target language. Then, have students translate the terms or phrases in English or language of origin.

Write the Room

This activity is a great way to practice vocabulary. Post key structures, definitions, or descriptions from a story. Students rotate the room and write the answers to the questions. Want to put more of a spin on it? Post vocabulary from a story and have students rewrite the story or create a new story.

Running Dictation

Get students moving with this activity. Post 5-10-15 sentence strips in the hallway or around the room. Students will work in pairs or groups to run and relay information on strips to their partners.
